Meet the tour leader at 04:00 hrs at the Malta International Airport for check-in on your direct flight to Sofia departing at 06:00 hrs. Upon arrival at 08:00 hrs, your private coach will take you to your 4* Ramada Hotel for breakfast. After some time to freshen up, join the tour leader and your local English-speaking guide for a panoramic tour around the Bulgarian capital, in order to familiarize yourself better with such a beautiful city and its most fascinating places of interest. After check-in and room allocation, you may want to join the tour leader for an afternoon excursion to the Boyana Church (entrance included) on the outskirts of Bucharest. This church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1979 and owes its global fame mainly to the wall paintings of 1259 which demonstrates the exceptional achievements of the Bulgarian medieval culture. Return to your hotel in time for dinner (optional) and overnight.
After breakfast, join the tour leader for a full day excursion to the Rila Monastery (entrance included). The biggest Bulgarian spiritual center since the middle ages is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list and is located in a picturesque mountain area. The Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St. John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was re-built and houses a rich collection of icons and wall-paintings. Make your way back to Sofia for some shopping in one of the biggest malls before returning to your hotel in time for dinner (optional) and overnight.
Today join the tour leader for a visit to the city of Plovdiv. Just like Rome, Plovdiv straddles seven hills; but as Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, it’s far more ancient. It is best loved for its romantic old town, packed with colourful and creaky 19th-century mansions that are now house-museums, galleries and guesthouses. Enjoy your free time, just days before Plovdiv takes the reign as Europe’s Capital of Culture from Valletta. In the afternoon, head back to Sofia for a few hours of rest before joining in the New Year’s Eve dinner celebrations (optional) at the hotel. Dinner will be on a buffet basis and local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are included. An astounding show program including live performance and many surprises awaits you.
After later breakfast and some free time, join the tour leader for an afternoon visit to Koprivshtitsa. A historic town lying on the Topolnitsa river among the Sredna Gora mountains. Behind colourful house fronts and babbling streams broods Koprivshtitsa’s revolutionary spirit. This museum-village immediately pleases the eye with its numerous restored National Revival–period mansions. It’s a peaceful, touristy place, but Koprivshtitsa was once the heart of Bulgaria’s revolution against the Ottomans. Today, Koprivshtitsa’s few streets are dotted with historic homes interspersed with rambling, overgrown lanes, making it a romantic getaway and a safe and fun place for children
After breakfast, enjoy your last few hours within Sofia before check out (*). After check out, you can join the group for a shopping trip to the biggest supermarket in Sofia for some last-minute bargains before returning to your hotel for your farewell dinner. Later your private coach will transfer you to Sofia’s airport for your flight back to Malta departing at 23:55 hrs
