Meet your tour leader (Dun Gorg Dalli) at 06:00 hrs at the Malta International Airport for check-in on your direct Air Malta flight to Rome departing at 07:55 hrs. Upon arrival, your private coach will make its way towards the hotel in Assisi. After check-in, room allocation and some free time for a desired rest, re-meet your tour leader for an orientation walk (on foot) with the emphasis being the Porziuncola Basilica or more commonly known as the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. Part of this sanctuary is the original stone chapel, called the Porziuncola, which is where St. Francis lived and worked after founding the Franciscan Order. It is also where he had his vision in 1216, during which he witnessed the Virgin Mary. Following this vision, the church was visited by a great many pilgrims, and thus the great Baroque church was also built. Later head to the Roselo, or Rose Garden. Here, you will find a very special type of rose: one without any thorns! Legend has it that in this location, Saint Francis himself rolled naked amongst the thorn bushes, in order to combat doubt and temptation. It is then said that on contact with the Saint’s body, thorn-less roses began to bloom, and they still do to this day! These special flowers can only be found in this particular rose garden, and are named Rosa Canina Assisiensis. On the wall of the courtyard you can see a mural of St. Francis, surrounded by the modest Porziuncola chapel, olive groves and of course, thorn-less red roses. Soon afterwards concelebrate mass, before returning to your hotel for dinner (optional) and overnight.
Today after breakfast, you can join your fellow group members for mass within the hotel’s precincts. Later join the group for an excursion to the city of Assisi. Start by heading towards the Santa Chiara Basilica, which houses the original crucifix, so famously linked with God’s message to Francis back in 1205.Later head towards the place where, Francis was born and raised for 24 years. One can also easily imagine the scene where Francis abanded his life of luxury and become a devotee of the Christian faith. After some free time for personal leisure and/or shopping. One may also indulge in a light lunch (extra), or head towards the Santa Maria sopra la Minerva church or the cathedral dedicated to San Rufino. Later re-join the group to walk towards the Basilica of Saint Francis. Start your visit by visiting the Basilica Superiore, which houses, the most the world-famous frescos by Giotto and his scholars that depict St. Francis life and described by San Bonnaventura. Continue your way towards the Basilica Inferiore and later to the crypt which houses St. Francis holy remains. Later head back to the hotel for dinner (optional) and overnight.
After breakfast, you are encouraged to join your fellow group members for a day excursion to La Verna and Gubbio. In La Verna, all are invited to join the tour leader and spiritual director, Dun Gorg Dalli in mass before heading to Gubbio. Gubbio is famous as the location where St. Francis tamed the terrorising wold. In recent years, Gubbio has gained notoriety as being the film set location for the popular TV series Don Matteo. Later head back to your hotel for dinner (optional) and overnight.
After breakfast and mass, join the tour leader for a full day excursion to Perugia. Lifted by a hill above a valley patterned with fields, where the river Tiber runs swift and clear, Perugia is Umbria's petite and immediately likeable capital. Its historic centre rises in a helter-skelter of cobbled alleys, arched stairways and piazzas framed by magnificent mansions. History seeps through every shadowy corner of these streets and an aimless wander through them can feel like time travel. Together with your tour leader you will visit the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Lawrence as well as Perugia’s central piazza masterpiece, the delicate pink and white marble Fontana Maggiore. Later head back to your hotel for dinner (optional) and overnight.
After breakfast and check out, head towards Rome’s airport, but not before a free excursion to the City of Cascia. Cascia was the home of Saint Rita and is an important place of pilgrimage. Saint Rita’s bodu, which has remained in-corrupt over the centuries, is venerated today in the shrine at Cascia which bears its name. Later continue your way towards Rome in time for your flight back to Malta departing at 20:05 hrs.
