Itinerary

Behind Savona’s sprawling port facilities, the city’s unexpectedly graceful medieval centre is well worth a stop. Among the old-town treasures to survive destruction by Genoese forces in the 16th century are the baroque Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta and the lumbering Fortezza del Priamàr. There’s also a nice urban buzz, with lots of new shops, bars and restaurants regenerating the old centre.

Italy’s third-largest city is one of its oldest, most artistic and most appetising. Naples’ centro storico (historic centre) is a Unesco World Heritage Site, its archaeological treasures are among the world’s most important, and its swag of vainglorious palaces, castles and churches make Rome look positively provincial. Then there’s the food. Blessed with rich volcanic soils, a bountiful sea, and centuries of culinary know-how, the Naples region is one of Italy’s epicurean heavyweights, serving up the country’s best pizza, pasta and coffee, and many of its most celebrated seafood dishes, street snacks and sweet treats.

For millennia at the crossroads of civilisations, Palermo delivers a heady, heavily spiced mix of Byzantine mosaics, Arabesque domes and frescoed cupolas. This is a city at the edge of Europe and at the centre of the ancient world, a place where souk-like markets rub against baroque churches, where date palms frame Gothic palaces and where the blue-eyed and fair have bronze-skinned cousins.

Now known as the clubbing capital of the Med due to its legendary nightlife, the Balearic island of Ibiza has much more than simply that to offer. You are sure to enjoy exploring the Old Quarter of its charming capital, Ibiza Town, with its 16th century citadel and fortifications rising steeply from the
harbour and the Gothic Catalan cathedral. There are more stylish designs on display in the chic fashion boutiques in the lower town where you will also find numerous restaurants, cafes and bars.

Dominated by its iconic Gothic cathedral, the Majorcan capital and cruise port Palma has been transformed in recent years into one of the most sophisticated hotspots of the Mediterranean. Fine shops rub shoulders with authentic Balearic restaurants and tapas bars in this easy to navigate city. From the harbour filled with expensive yachts, wander up to the magnificent cathedral and stand in awe when you realise it took 500 years to complete.
